After years of requests from the maker community, Coda has finally rolled out Table Locking — a feature that promises to give us better control over our critical data. As someone who’s built countless Coda docs for clients, I know firsthand how nerve-wracking it can be when collaborators have unrestricted access to your carefully crafted tables. But does this new feature solve all our problems? Let’s dive in.
The journey from page locking to table control
Before Table Locking, protecting your data meant relying on page locking — a blunt instrument that often felt like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. The system only offered per-page protection, meaning you could lock a page containing a table view, but that only protected that specific view on that specific page. If your table appeared in multiple views across different pages, you found yourself playing whack-a-mole, manually locking each page individually.
The restrictions were frustratingly all-or-nothing too. Page locking prevented all edits to everything on that page, not just the table you actually cared about protecting. This led many of us to seek various workarounds, using complex formulas, “read-only” columns, and sometimes separate cross-docs to achieve better control. The…
