Enjoy the Filter Power in the CFL
This blog is about the filter you see below. I created it in 20 seconds and it does something that is not so easy anywhere else, like in a spreadsheet.
The use case behind it, was a question from a friend to run through bank statements to check monthly payments. Every months a few payments where made to a bank (loan) and the result should be every month the same. Thus if we need $ 100, it can have various building blocks, but as long as the total is $ 100 each month, it is fine. What I had to do was to filter on month and year and on the person who made the payment.
We also had to check on money coming in and getting out. Incoming means a plus, outgoing translates as a negative number. Boolean logic is our friend as you see below:
While this rather easy in Coda it is not so obvious elsewhere. As you see we filter on 4 properties:
- the month
- the year
- the person
- positive amount
The last two are rather easy. They construct a filter you apply often. The main reason for writing this blog is that you can filter on the properties of a date. Thus on the month and the year using the ‘thisRow’ logic. Give me every row that has the same value as thisRow and for that row give me the amount etc. So elegant and easy in Coda.
It is mainly because of the power of the Coda Formula Language that I bet on the product. Yes there are other great pluses, but on a scale of 1–10, the CFL rates 11.
