MailJet Email Tracking and Coda.io

More often than not you see in the web link the letters UTM. Ever wondered what it meant ? “UTM” stands for “Urchin tracking module”. It was created by Urchin Software Corporation (which was later acquired by Google), and it can now be used with Google Analytics. You can also use any other analytics tool you prefer — just make sure you use the right UTM structure that differs from one tool to the other.

An example of a URL link enriched with UTM tags looks like this:

https://www.yourwebsite.com/yourpage/contentofthepage/?utm_source=weeklynewsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=promospring2020&utm_term=skincare&utm_content=logolink

In this URL, some parameters are mandatory and others optional. You find all about it in this MailJet blog . This UTM tracking is mainly applied when working with tools such as Google Analytics. The information it provides is general in her kind. It is about the source (email in our case), so where the traffic is coming from, about the medium, for example, email, social media, organic, ads, etc. It gives information about the campaign , so you know via Google Analytics what campaign generated the traffic. In short, by following the traffic from your links in different platforms and sources, you know where to put your effort, what’s leveraging the best revenue in terms of media and content, and, if you have to make a change to your strategy, where and how to make that change.

This is all rather general. We’d like to have a look on a personal level.

-mails are a good way to identify users (clients). Though it happens people use multiple mail addresses, the majority has one for each role (private or business). Once we have the email, we use it as a key to connect data inside Coda by We set-up a link between MailJet and Coda via Zapier.

How to bring tracking data into Coda?

Since Coda does not offer a MailJet Pack yet we use Zapier to pull the data in and — when we send personalised emails — to push it out. Though Zapier is not as self evident as one may hope for, we assume you know how to link your accounts. A practical important point is that you only need the behaviour of your users, not your own behaviour, meaning tracking an email ‘send’ is not necessary. But if this one gets blocked or opened, you want to know and maybe link it to something else.

Create a table

When Zapier communicates with Coda, it communicates with a table and second with the columns in that table. I reviewed in Zapier the info they offered and I created a table that was matching the exact same field name. This correspondence logic is certainly in the beginning of any process rather practical. It is easier to cut then to find out what you have missed. And also, follow the initial order as you get data presented, it will pay off.

Zapier logic

The set-up was successful, around 2000 emails went out. It was a bit after that I understood where the limit of 750 tasks stands for in my plan. I consumed my tasks rather fast via this integration, though Zapier was so kind to give me some tasks for free. The software is configured in such a way that you get the idea it does something great for you once you upgrade. It easily gets very expensive this way. Zapier offers first class support and I love to use it for smart automations, but not for bulk actions like this one.

the zapier business model friendly brought to you

Long story short, Zapier is budget wise not a smart choice to follow-up on your emails. The CSV file offered by MailJet contains the same info. I used the CSV pack offered by Coda and got all the data I needed before sending out my next email.
